Ashton Merck

PhD Candidate, Duke University

I am a PhD Candidate in the Department of History at Duke University.  My dissertation analyzes the evolving scientific, technical, and legal challenges in food safety regulation and international trade. Through an investigation of the development of transnational, private, and global standards in food safety, this project highlights the role of multinational firms in shaping both domestic and foreign policies regarding trade and commerce. More generally, I am interested in how governments, societies and businesses choose to regulate and manage risks to health and safety. I hold a B.A. in History and Printmaking from the University of Georgia.
